Taquile Calendar of the Ancestors
Description
The Taquile Calendar of the Ancestors comes from one of the most remarkable weaving communities on earth. On the island of Taquile, rising from the cold blue waters of Lake Titicaca at over 12,000 feet, the act of weaving is inseparable from the act of living. This belt is hand spun and hand woven from llama fiber, dyed in deep reds, whites, and purples using only natural pigments. Along its center runs a continuous line of pictographs — a communal guide to the year ahead, telling the community when to turn the soil, when to bring in the harvest, when to hold the wedding season, and when to gather for feasting.
This tradition has been kept alive on Taquile for generations, recognized by UNESCO as part of humanity's intangible cultural heritage. It is a calendar, a chronicle, and a work of extraordinary craft all in one.
