The heritage and craftsmanship of Colombian filigree jewelry

In the midst of captivating landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Colombia boasts a tradition of artistic craftsmanship known worldwide. Among its many creative expressions, filigree jewelry stands as a true masterpiece, manifesting the skill and creativity of Colombian artisans.

This intricate art form has been an integral part of Colombia's cultural identity for centuries, captivating admirers with its ethereal beauty and delicate designs. Colombian filigree jewelry is celebrated for its versatility and elegance. The pieces range from delicate earrings and intricate silver necklaces to stunning bracelets and ornate rings.

Often inspired by nature, these incredible works of art such as the butterfly earrings Roberto and Cesar are making here incorporate elements such as flowers, leaves, and animals, reflecting Colombia's remarkable biodiversity.

Mompox: the home of modern Colombian filigree

Welcome to Mompox, Colombia; former Spanish colonial trade hub, situated on the banks of the mystical Magdalena River. Silver and gold once flowed freely through this city, bringing with it wealth and knowledge of jewelry making techniques from around the world.

Although Mompox is no longer a trade hub, the art of making silver filigree jewelry is still being passed down through generations.

The TresPalacios are one of those families; jewelry making has been in their family as long as they can remember. They use techniques and tools that have been around hundreds of years to make the spectacular and intricate silver filigree jewelry that we carry, and they’re one of the last groups of craftsmen in South America doing so.

We had the chance to visit the workshop of Roberto TresPalacio to film his process and discuss the heritage and craft of filigree jewelry.

How the last filigree jewelry in South America is made

In the workshop, the TresPalacios begin the process by melting silver ore into ingots. They hammer and draw the silver through small holes to create the right gauge of silver threads; this process is done completely by hand.

After the threads are the correct gauge, they employ a variety of techniques such as twisting and coiling the fine wires to create the desired shapes for the sterling silver jewelry, resulting in breathtaking pieces. These various techniques and shapes are incredibly fine and require a high degree of craftsmanship and skill to create.

One filigree technique is the use of caracols, a small, spiral-like pattern that is repeated until it makes up the shape of the jewelry. The caracol can be seen in most of the filigree jewelry we carry, such as the Traditional Caracol Hanging Earrings
and Sterling Silver Filigree Leaf Necklace.

After the pieces of the filigree are formed, a small dab of flux is heated up by a foot-powered torch to join the pieces together. The post is the last step when making silver earrings - the posts and hooks are handmade as well, and are carefully hammered and sanded down so that they are comfortable to wear. Likewise, the silversmiths make their own sterling silver chains for their necklaces by hand.

We are proud to work with artisans such as the TresPalacios family, and we hope that you find their filigree jewelry just as incredible and beautiful as we do.
